Overview

Located near Southport Airfield, the Coombabah Sewage Treatment Plant is one of the largest treatment facilities on the Gold Coast, servicing approximately 50% of the city's sewage. In response to anticipated regional growth over the next decade, the Gold Coast Council committed approximately $150 million towards an upgrade. Pructon was engaged to assist with the expansion of the current plant to accommodate this growth, delivering multiple upgrades and additions to the Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) and Dewatering (DEW) areas of the treatment plant. As part of the project, Pructon fabricated 222.5 metres of stainless steel piping in our Gladstone workshop, which was then strategically transported to the Gold Coast site. This project ensures that the Coombabah Wastewater Treatment Plant will operate at the capacity required for the predicted population growth of the Gold Coast over the next ten years.

Scope of Work

  • Dewatering (DEW) Section:
    • Installation of centrifuge and associated pipework.
    • Installation of dosing skid and transfer skid, along with associated pipework.
    • Installation of polymer dosing tank and associated UPVC pipework.
    • Installation of potable water assembly and 316 stainless steel pipework.
    • Installation of polymer-powered storage hopper.
    • Installation of service water manifold with associated 316 stainless steel, 2-inch pipework.
    • Hydrotesting of installed systems.
  • Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) Section:
    • Installation of gravity drainage deck.
    • Fabrication and installation of fopper.
    • Installation of screw pump.
    • Installation of three thickener feed pumps.
    • Installation of DICL pipework.
    • Fabrication of receival hoppers.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Increased Capacity: The upgrades ensure the Coombabah Wastewater Treatment Plant can accommodate the anticipated population growth of the Gold Coast over the next decade.
  • Enhanced Efficiency: The installation of modern equipment and systems improves operational efficiency, ensuring reliable sewage treatment.
  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Careful planning and execution of the project minimised disruption to existing operations, allowing for a seamless upgrade process.
