Overview

Pructon was engaged to enhance the structural integrity of the fixed plant at the Rio Tinto site in Gove Peninsula. The project involved reinforcing existing steel structures to accommodate additional loads from new piping and steel installations.

Scope of Work

  • Structural Steel Enhancements: Strengthened existing steel tanks and piping by adding structural steel and cleats using both welded and bolted connections.
  • Installation of Piping Rack: Constructed a new piping rack to support additional piping systems, ensuring alignment with operational requirements.
  • Concrete Footing Remediation: Remediated existing concrete footings and installed new ones to support the increased load from the additional piping and steel.
  • Surface Treatment: Conducted off-site fabrication and surface treatment of the structural steel, followed by on-site sandblasting and painting of welded areas to protect against corrosion.

Outcomes and Benefits

  • Increased Structural Integrity: The upgrades significantly enhanced the strength and stability of the fixed plant, ensuring it could safely accommodate the additional loads.
  • Improved Operational Efficiency: By adding a new piping rack, the project facilitated better organisation and management of piping systems within the plant.
  • Corrosion Protection: Comprehensive sandblasting and painting of the steelwork provided robust protection against environmental factors, extending the lifespan of the installations.
  • Successful Completion: The project was completed efficiently, maintaining high safety and quality standards throughout the process.
